The Mercuria Hackathon 2022

We need your help to accelerate the energy transition and innovate our IT to be more sustainable.

The Mercuria Hackathon is a weekend event where interdisciplinary teams come together to create innovative software development solutions that solve big energy transition challenges whilst using fewer physical resources and energy more efficiently.

Hack with us over a weekend in the Swiss Alps. You could be joining up to 50 fellow participants for a free stay in the beautiful resort of Villars-sur-Ollon in December 2022 for some hard work, great fun and incredible scenery.

Mercuria is committed to driving the energy transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. This is an opportunity for you to take part in that commitment as you help us to innovate our IT to be more sustainable, taking advantage of green software standards.

The challenge

About 90% of world trade is transported by sea and carbon emissions from shipping are increasing. In 2018, shipping’s share of global CO emissions was 2.9% or around 1.1 billion tonnes which was more than the annual emissions of some entire nations such as Canada, Brazil, Mexico, France or the UK.

If left unchecked, scientific studies predict that shipping could become responsible for 17% of global emissions by 2050.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to reduce the shipping sector’s overall greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050.

Mercuria is running a hackathon to raise awareness of this important topic and to lay down a challenge for like-minded software engineers to experiment with leading technology and create real solutions which could form the foundation for innovative change in the shipping industry.

The benefits

We know that hackathons aren’t just about solving problems and the Mercuria Hackathon will be no different.

If selected, you will have the opportunity to join up to 50 fellow participants in the Villars Alpine Resort in the beautiful Swiss Alps where your food and lodgings will be paid for by us. We will also be contributing to your rail fare to allow a diverse range of people from across Europe to join us.

The weekend will be simultaneously intense and fun. You will work in teams to solve up to 3 challenges during the day and in the evenings. There will be ample opportunity to network and meet with fellow participants as well as people that work at Mercuria.

Whilst the event will be competitive, it’s not a competition. But, of course, it wouldn’t be a hackathon if there weren’t any prizes, although these may not be given for what you think…

How to get involved

First. The challenges are technical in nature, so we are looking for participants that have a background in information technology, whether that be programming, data science, devops or UI/UX. This could be as an undergraduate student or someone with real world experience. We are looking for a range of people from a diverse set of backgrounds and locations to get involved.

Second. Ensure that you are available to take part during the entire weekend from the evening of Friday 16th December to the evening of Sunday 18th December.

Third. If you think you have the skills, are available for the weekend and would like to get involved, please register your interest by the 14th November, 2022. PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION HAS NOW CLOSED.

Fourth. We selected a diverse mix of up to 50 participants to take part in the event and will be letting people know if they have been selected by the end of November.
